Yes, I do realize that we're a wee past Summer Solstice. But if you live in the St. John's area you might understand why a person may not quite feel like we've reached summer yet. Nonetheless, I do apologize for the delay in releasing this edition of our newsletter. There are no excuses, just life.

Women of the Wheel on facebook

Women of the Wheel is back on facebook.

We love our quarterly moots, but sometimes it would be nice to check in with the group in between moots. That's why we revived Women of the Wheel on facebook. Here we can check in to see what's going on, we can ask questions, post information that we want to share. We can even stop by for an online chat with one another. Here, those who can not make it out to moots can still actively participate in our group. Basically, it's just one more tool to help build our Pagan community.

Everyone can see this group if they search for Women of the Wheel but it is closed to members. If you know someone who may want to join, perhaps someone that I may have overlooked, just ask them to send a short email, along with a request to join.

If you are member of Women of the Wheel but have not received an invite to join our facebook group, I apologize. Facebook's search engine did not locate all members names. Please send a request to join and I will add you. Alternatively, if you are not a member of Women of the Wheel and would like to join our facebook group please send a friend request to Bríghid Pagan with a brief description about yourself and why you are interested in joining our group.

We will continue to maintain our blog and to distribute our newsletter. Members will continue to receive updates for moots, etc from womenofthewheel@gmail.com. Women of the Wheel on facebook will not replace our current means of communication. It's just one more outreach tool that we'll use.

Also, because facebook is an online community we will use this group to reach out to other Pagan women beyond our physical sphere of the St. John's area.

Blessed Beltaine

Happy Beltaine! I hope you have all enjoyed merry celebrations. Our Beltaine edition of the Women of the Wheel newsletter is now available for your reading pleasure.

We'll soon be meeting for our upcoming moot, details will be emailed to members. If you are not a member and are interested in learning more about Women of the Wheel and/or are interested in becoming a member please contact our coordinator at womenofthewheel@gmail.com. We are a group of Pagan women (must be of legal age) who meet routinely in the St. John's area to share in celebration of the turning of the wheel and to have conversation and to learn from one another.

It's official, Spring has arrived! By the many accounts of friends and family who had clear skies in their areas the full moon was big, bright and amazing. Here in St. John's we had cloudy skies, nonetheless the power of the full moon could be felt by many.

Three most beautiful things

This morning I picked up the book "The Celtic Spirit: Daily Meditations for the Turning Year," by Caitlín Matthews from my bookshelf. This is a great little book full of quotes and proverbs intended to inspire the reader. I have had this book for many years, and every now and again I take it out, flip open to a page and consider the message in front of me.

Thought for today... "The three most beautiful things in the world: a ship under full sail, a woman with child, and a full moon." ~ Scots Gaelic triad.

I ask you, as Caitín asks readers in her book, "What are the three most beautiful things in your world?"

Blessed Samhain

To those who honour the turning of the wheel in tune with the lunar cycle Samhain begins when the full moon enters Scorpio. According to Llewellyn's Witches' Datebook 2010 the moon is full at 9:37 pm (EDT) on October 22. For those who follow the fixed date calendar Samhain falls on October 31 every year.

For many Pagan's, Samhain is the most sacred night of the year. It is the time when the veil between the worlds is thinnest, and thus at this time we honour our Ancestors who have come before us and the Gods of our people. On this Samhain...

Fall Harvest

I found this chant in the book The Goddess Companion, by Patricia Monaghan. With the fall equinox approaching many Pagans will be celebrating harvest festivals. Traditions intended to honour all that sustains us are common at this time of the year and we give thanks for the many blessings bestowed upon us. This Russian harvest chant is lovely for this time of the year.

Thirteen Goals of a Witch

Not every woman at Women of the Wheel considers herself a Witch, and not every woman who does consider herself a Witch follows the same path as that of her sister Witch. There are many ways by which one can travel the road to spiritual fulfilment, each path valid in its own right. I mention this because recently I came across a post on a Facebook group called Ravensgrove Coven titled “Thirteen Goals of A Witch,” that I would like to share with readers. As the poster comments the thirteen goals were written by Scott Cunningham but, since I appreciate the wisdom of the comments this poster has attached to the Thirteen Goals of a Witch I thought I would share the post with you in its entirety. Whether a woman believes herself a Witch or not, these goals are worth considering as part of our own practices.

The Thirteen Goals of a Witch

These goals were written by Scott Cunningham. I find them very important and significant. What I love about them is that they are not a bunch of lofty, unattainable goals. They are a way of life, and realistic things that can be achieved through work and dedication. I think that we should remind ourselves of them daily. Have them written somewhere in your home. Know them by heart and say them out loud to yourself every day.

Know yourself
Who are you? Do you really know all there is to know about yourself? Getting to know who we are is a life time journey. We are always growing and changing. The exploration of the soul is the most important journey you will ever make...and the longest one too.

Know your Craft
The Craft. So many different ways of worship. So many traditions! Knowing your chosen Craft path doesn't end when you have read all the 'right' books or after initiation. That is, in a sense the beginning of knowing your Craft
To achieve any of these goals, you must be on a constant quest to learn more. More about yourself, your Craft and the world around you.

Apply knowledge with wisdom
Some people seem to think that these 2 words are interchangeable. They are not. Knowledge is what you know. You gain knowledge through various forms of study. Wisdom is something else entirely. It is something that can not be taught. It is that which you gain through experience and intuition.
Combine your knowledge with your wisdom.
This seems to be something of a challenge as many of us have busy lives. We have many responsibilities and it can be difficult at times to just stop..take a deep breath , and put your personal priorities into perspective. This means creating balance in your life. Spiritual, emotional and physical. If you don't have balance, you're unbalanced. It's as simple as that. Make time to achieve balance...you won't regret it

Keep your thoughts in good order
Self explanatory.

Keep your words in good order
Self explanatory but the quotes "Speak little, listen much" come to mind, along with "Think before you speak".

Celebrate life
Enjoy your life! Celebrate it and all of the wonders it brings you. There is cause for celebration every day. From the simple things like waking up, enjoying a nice cup of tea or a warm bath to the more obvious ones. In Pagan books of days, you see that everyday is cause for celebration

Attune with the cycles of the Earth
This can be a tough thing to do if your schedule seems destined to keep you indoors. Working long hours in a concrete building with no window, driving in grid lock traffic and then rushing to take care of your house hold tasks. Our ways worship the Earth and there are ways (no matter how busy you are) to attune with the cycles of the Earth.. It just takes some creativity and imagination

Breathe and eat correctly
The importance of eating correctly is fairly obvious. You are what you eat. Unfortunately, since healthy living has come in to major focus, many have become confused about just what is and is not good for you. There are, however some foods that never come into question. Fresh fruits/ vegetables and grains. A balanced diet that includes these every day is essential. Breathing is something that is not discussed very much. There are yoga and meditation books and web pages that do discuss the importance of adopting a calm, slow and deep breathing pattern

Exercise the body
Self explanatory

Meditate
Meditation is (in my opinion) as important to your health as a proper diet and regular exercise. It is also imperative, along with visualization for successful rituals, spells and divination

Honor the Goddess and God
Self explanatory

The wheel of Summer turns

A wise woman, whom I admire, recently shared with me a mantra she was striving to embrace, “time is finite,” she said.

Indeed, time is finite. And, as the balmy summer nights give way to crisp cool mornings I must face the reality that perhaps all that I had planned to experience this summer may have been a tad bit over ambitious. Back in June, when I became the Women of the Wheel coordinator (coincidentally also around the same time my wise friend shared her mantra with me), I had hoped to organize at least one gathering over the summer. Unfortunately, “time is finite,” and a gathering this summer was not to be our fate.

Nonetheless, fall is fast approaching, and sometime around (but not on) the fall equinox the Women of the Wheel will gather as we have done for many seasons before to share in feasting and friendship.

If any member would like to host this fall moot please contact me via email to make arrangements.

Summer Moot Thank You

A wonderful time was had at the Women of the Wheel Summer Moot. The company was, as usual, great. The food, plentiful, I mean really plentiful. And the bardic circle was amazing. Songs were sung, chants and poems recited, and we were blessed with a mesmerizing performance of “Siúil A Rúin,” a beautiful traditional Irish song. Of course, we were blessed with original songs and chants composed by our talented members as well. All to the rhythm of drums beating, rattles shaking, and children playing in the background.

As the new coordinator of Women of the Wheel, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our out-going coordinator, Scotia, for all of her hard work in the past. Many thanks as well, to Women of the Wheel co-founder J for hosting tonight’s event.
I am truly grateful for the vision you both had to give birth to Women of the Wheel and am excited to take up this journey.

Researching Pagan Families

Mandy D. Furney is a PhD Candidate at the University of Waterloo in the Laurier-Waterloo PhD in Religious Studies. She is interested in learning more about the second generation of Pagans (kids being raised in the tradition) and their experiences; the ways in which religion is transmitted across generations, routinized (or not), and re-formed.

NOTICE #1: Women of the Wheel is LEAVING FACEBOOK.

Women of the Wheel is leaving Facebook, not because of any faults with Facebook, but because I, as the administrator, would rather use this blog as WOTW's one and only form of online communication/presence. If you are a Pagan woman who would like to become a member, please send us an email.

NOTICE #2: Women of the Wheel events

This year's Spring Weave was very poorly attended and last fall's Autumn Circle had only a small number of participants. Therefore, for the foreseeable future, WOTW will not be planning any “events.” Instead, WOTW will revert to its former incarnation--as a regular moot. At this point in time, we are aiming for four moots (meetings) a year.

If you are a current WOTW member, have the space and are willing to act as host, please let me know. As a host, you invite into your home members of Women of the Wheel for an evening of informal discussion/potluck. As one of WOTW’s aims has been to be child-friendly, we would appreciate any hosts who may be able to accommodate mothers with children, although we fully understand that not everyone is equipped to do so.

Spring Weave 2009

SPRING WEAVE is an informal, Spring-themed, celebratory get-together for Women of the Wheel members.

When: Saturday, April 25, 2009

Time: 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Location: Private home in St. John's

The event will include casting a Circle; craft-making; chant, poem, story, and song sharing; and discussion. Participants are asked to bring finger foods.

***Interested parties who are not current Women of the Wheel members must contact Kelly at womenofthewheel@gmail.com for permission to attend and for the exact event location.***

CRAFTS
You may choose one or more of the following crafts to make, or you may make something entirely different! All participants are responsible for bringing her own supplies.

1) Faery Flag--Supplies: several sheets of tissue paper, markers, glue, glitter, stickers (or anything else you'd want to use).
2) Spring Crown--Supplies: several strips of ribbon that are at least twice as long as the circumference of your head, artifical flowers, beads (or anything else you'd want to use).
3) May Basket--Supplies: 2-3 sheets construction paper, couple of yards of ribbon in different colours, bells that can hang, needle and thread.
4) Flying Thing--Supplies: small stick and anything you'd like to attach to it, be it yarn, ribbon, tissue paper...whatever would hang from it.

CHANTS & SONGS
Participants are asked to please come prepared with at least one chant, song, poem or story to share, if possible.

As well, there will be three chants in particular that will be sung at different times during this event:

Autumn Circle

Hail the rising sun

Well, it's 8:20am on the morning after the Winter Solstice, and I just couldn't wait to write a post on our blog. We just wrapped up our first ritual together to celebrate Yule, and what a night it was!

Four Women of the Wheel members were able to participate: me, Lindsey, Jill, and Deanne. We began our evening with an outdoor ritual. The air was cold, but the wind was low, the sky was clear, and the bright white moon was high and full, like our spirits. We lit a fire and cast a Circle, saluted the elements and evoked the Gods. Our rite included a banishing spell, led by Deanne, to rid ourselves of things we didn't want any longer. We shared songs, food, and wine, and then opened the Circle to transition to the indoor part of the evening.

We had a lot of ritual/activity things planned for indoors, but as we filled our bellies with hot apple cider, beef stew, cannelloni, hash brown casserole, a cheese and meat tray, and cookie desserts, we re-evaluated our plans and decided to cut out some of the ritual-type activities we'd planned to do, like the lighting of candles in all the windows and the guided meditation.

Instead, we exchanged Yule gifts, then moved on to decorating our own glass ball ornaments. By this time, it was 3:00am, so we were laughing as much as we were creating. Deanne made a beautiful ornament with blue and white snowflakes inside; Lindsey artfully painted a wreath, a sprig of holly, and a snowflake on hers. Myself and Jill didn't have quite as much luck - I went overboard on the sprinkles, so my ornament looks like it has the pox, and Jill went through three balls before she made "Moe," a snowman head that looked so comical, I couldn't stop laughing every time she added something to him. There were tears, I laughed so hard. I think sleep deprivation played a part, too.

After the ornaments, we moved on to decorating the wreath, made from real boughs, that we planned to use as an offering at sunrise. It turned out to be gorgeous: Pine cones, rowan berries, clementine, and small apple-like fruit were weaved in with twine. As we began adding these natural decorations, we chanted, "We are a Circle within a Circle / with no beginning and never ending."

Then, because a couple of us were really tired and Lindsey had to leave, we cleaned up, said our good-byes to Lindsey, and bunked down for the remaining three hours we had before leaving to greet the dawn. We roused ourselves at 7:10am, I grabbed a coffee and the wreath, Deanne and Jill grabbed their things, and we headed for Signal Hill.

There were only a few people at Signal Hill when we arrived, none of whom appeared to be Pagans, as they were either taking a stroll or taking pictures. We got settled in a spot near the tower, but out of site of passersby, and began chanting, "We are one with the infinite Sun / Forever and ever and ever." We could not see the horizon, as a blanket of fog and/or cloud sat upon it, but as we chanted, the sky above this fog began to redden. Then Jill read a blessing and Deanne and I tossed the wreath to the ground.

We stood a moment watching the sky light up and then, between the foggy cloud, a tiny sliver of sun poked up and the breath caught in our throats. It was glorious to witness. The sun rose right in front of us, between a break in those clouds. We were enchanted. Jill said with wonder, "Imagine... This happens everyday."

We admired the sunrise for minutes more, then made a beeline to our cars. Originally, we were going to end the morning by having breakfast together, but we begged off that idea in the end and hugged each other before heading home.

What more can I say? It was wonderful. Happy Yule, everyone.

Celebrating the Solstice

Things are going quite smashingly with our group. We welcomed a new member to our last moot. Tree is an experienced Pagan, feminist, and all-around wonderful person whose perspectives and stories will, I'm sure, bring a new, enriching layer to the dynamics of our growing group.

At our last moot, we decided it was time to get hands-on and celebrate a festival together. We chose this coming Winter Solstice to get together as women and Pagans united, and face the darkness of the year with the same amount of love, courage, and mystery as all women have done in herstory, are doing in our present, and will continue to do in the future.

Our next moot will be held on Sunday, October 14, at 6pm, in a St. John's location. Again, we remain open to new members, so if you are interested, please contact Kelly-Anne at kmeadus@nl.rogers.com.

We are presently still accepting new members. Our group is child-friendly, so if you have young children, they are more than welcome to attend with you.

Over a year ago, myself and a fellow Wiccan talked about forming a localized, all-woman Pagan group. This idea was important to us because we wanted to make connections to other Pagans in the area - not an easy task in this province.

Newfoundland and Labrador may be geographically bigger than the country of Ireland, but our population is mainly rural, and so scattered over a wide area. Of the 500,000+ people living in this province, only one-fifth of us live in St. John's. The the rest of us dwell in either the two other cities in this province - Mount Pearl and Corner Brook - or in suburban/rural areas.

Together, I and my Pagan friend co-founded Women of the Wheel in March 2006. When we began, there were three members. We were aiming for six. Just over a year later, we have five, and we are proud of that accomplishment.

We meet once a month as Pagans to talk about what's important to us, as well as to share what we have learned, experienced, or created.

We decided to start an all-female Pagan group for two reasons: 1) we wanted to be an intimate, informal group, and 2) people of the same sex tend to share a bond that strengthens through continued, respected companionship.

In this day and age, Paganism is more often a chosen, rather than an inherited, path. Women of the Wheel hopes to connect to, and to share perspectives and enriched learning experiences with, Pagans locally and abroad.
